Department of Statistics
History
The Department of Statistics was established in 1978 at the College of Natural Sciences and Engineering (now known as the College of Natural Sciences). Since its founding, the department has produced over 2,500 bachelor’s degree holders, 30 master’s graduates, and 4 doctoral recipients. Currently, approximately 160 students are enrolled in the undergraduate program, and around 8 students are enrolled in the graduate program.
Educational objectives
The development of modern sciences and technologies has enabled the collection and analysis of data using quantitative methods across various fields, including data science, medical and pharmaceutical sciences, finance, economics, business administration, engineering, and the social sciences. Data analysis has become one of the most widespread practices in nearly every area, leading to an increasing demand for statisticians. In response to this growing need, the department aims to train professional statisticians who can collect and analyze data from diverse fields and apply statistical techniques for inference and prediction. The department offers specialized tracks in big data science, financial statistics, and biomedical statistics for both undergraduate and graduate students.
Facilities
The Department of Statistics operates two computer laboratories, equipped with state-of-the-art computers and software programs. These laboratories are used for computer-oriented and simulation-based courses.
Job Opportunities
Graduates of the department have diverse career opportunities, including positions in banks, insurance companies, securities firms, the Korean National Statistical Office, medical centers, medical device manufacturing companies, IT companies, as well as roles in secondary and tertiary education and overseas study programs.
